Words of Wisdom

Nothing New Under the Sun

There really is no 'new' wisdom to be gained for leading a healthy and content life. The Bible is the complete 'self help' book anyone can use to better themselves.  I have gathered a few famous quotes have a corresponding Bible verse for a short 'wisdom nuggets'.  Many of these are well known.

"Don't Worry, Be Happy" Bobby McFerrin

This phrase from a famous song sums up what Jesus says to His believers in the Book of Matthew Chapter 6 verses 19 through 34.  *40 million people in the US suffer from anxiety disorders. Most worries can be fall in one of these 4 categories: Fear of what I don't have, Fear of what I do have,  Fear of what I don't know. Fear of what could happen. This simple little phrase from a spiritual standpoint is exactly what we are to do when faced with any kind of fear, "Don't Worry, Be Happy."  Of course this is easier said than done. But, for the believer in Christ, His words are to be an anchor to our souls. These few scriptures should be memorized and trusted when ever someone is overcome with fear, believing that the Lord has not given His people a spirit of fear, but instead He gives His people true peace in the storms: Deuteronomy 31:6, Psalm 27:1, Psalm 34: 4-5, Psalm 46:1, Psalm 56:3, Psalm 118:6, Proverbs 3:25-26, Proverbs 25:29, Isaiah 41:10, John 14:1,  2 Timothy 1:7. These are a but a few of the most powerful verses to meditate and believe in when fear, worry, or anxiety comes upon a person.

"Keep Calm and Carry On" Winston Churchill

There is another famous song by the rock group Queen, called 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. one part of the lyrics has the phrase, "carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters." Now this "carry on" was a hopeless view of the future.  Carrying on with hope and courage is what Winston Churchill was talking about. Life is hard, trials and troubles come, often times without any warning. But those who have a close relationship with Christ have His promise to "never leave of forsake' His followers. They don't have to be afraid of anything because their God is with them. So they can securely, "Keep Calm and Carry on." Specific Bible verse: Deuteronomy 31:6 'Be strong and courageous, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the one who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you."

Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond' Charles Swindoll

Many people go through life as 'responders'. They respond to everything and everyone around them. The live their lives based on what others think of them. They are severely affected by external events. The opposite of a 'responder' is a 'contemplator'. Rather than just reacting to everything, the contemplator assesses the situation and makes a conscious decision on how they will respond. Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ was a contemplator. He wrote to the church how he learned how to be content in 'any' situation, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.' Philippians 4:12-13

"Where this is love, there is life" Mahatma Ghandi

Love.  The most common Bible verse is "God so loved the world, He sent His only begotten Son".  Ghandi was right, true love produces real life. Jesus Christ was the physical personification of real love. Only real love produces life. Nothing dead can love. Jesus IS love and He is IS life. Jesus Himself said, He came to give us life so we can live life more abundantly more freely, not bogged down by the troubles of this world.  Bible verses: John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." and John 10:10, "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.  I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly,"
"When the going gets tough, the tough get going" American witticism

It is true that the world is getting tougher to live in as we see the truths of the Bible come true, that before Jesus returns, the state of people, nature, countries, families in the world will be stressed out to an all time high. Many will want to give up or be bound in fear, but those whose names are in the Lamb's Book of Life should not have the same fearful, anxious, or hopeless outlook on life. Our hope is not in this world or it's leaders, that is why our faith should be as Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 "We are pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body."

What is key to dealing with the tough challenges in this life? Having the life of Jesus! How do we have His life? We believe in who He is, eternal God in the flesh, He was alive, tortured and died but rose again; recognize your utter hoplessness being an enemy of God, recognize and admit your sins and that you need and want Jesus to save you, be your Lord; and submit your whole heart, soul, and strength to Him; commit all your ways to live right by God's standards; study and read the Bible so you can know what His standards are. Find other believers so you can become a member of God's fam
